SmartLab

Our students must be equipped with the (STEM) Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math skills necessary to compete in college and the workforce.  Merrill’s 21st-century STEM program includes a state-of-the-art learning lab for students to discover new technologies while mastering STEM concepts, digital media arts, and other academic subjects.

This next-generation learning environment is project-based and student-centered, keeping student interest and increasing class participation.  We measure student learning and understanding through an ePortfolio, an electronically-linked portfolio of all of a student’s SmartLab artifacts.  The ePortfolio develops templates for students to set project objectives and completion plans. At the end of a particular project, students have a detailed display of information that documents the learning process and helps them communicate project outcomes using written, oral, and media applications.

What makes the SmartLab unique is that it helps students utilize technology in an academically focused environment that adapts to individual learning abilities and styles.  Imagine a classroom where a student can improve his or her critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, communication, creativity, research, and tech-savvy abilities all in one class period.  All of this and more is possible in Merrill’s SmartLab.
