Response to Intervention Courses
Language Exclamation- Language! is a comprehensive language arts curriculum that was developed for intermediate, middle and high school students. It provides students with an opportunity to master literacy skills needed to succeed in their literacy classroom on grade level. The instruction is differentiated into six levels (A-F), which provide exercises in Spelling, Vocabulary, Grammar, Reading, Writing, Spoken Language, and Content Subject Areas.
Literacy Skills- The literacy skills classes at Merrill are designed to support academic literacy for all students as they work towards post-secondary and work force readiness. One of the key factors to success in high school is ensuring that students have mastered grade level reading standards by the time they leave middle school. Literacy skills classes help students develop reading and comprehension strategies that give them the tools necessary to gain this standard mastery. Students are placed in classes that are best suited to their individual needs for stronger reading capability.
Math Skills- Students who need extra support in meeting grade level math expectations attend a Math Skills class. The class uses Dell Netbook computers to learn and practice math skills and concepts. Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS) is the name of the online program the students use.
“ALEKS is a Web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system…which uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn’t know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage and ALEKS avoids multiple-choice questions. A student who shows a high level of mastery of an ALEKS course will be successful in the actual course she is taking. ALEKS also provides the advantages of one-on-one instruction, 24/7, from virtually any Web-based computer.” www.aleks.com
