Newcomers

The Newcomer Center is part of the ELA (English Language Acquisition Program). It is designed for learners identified as having limited or interrupted education as well as minimal literacy skills in both their native language and English. Students in the Newcomer Centers are served for one or two semesters to prepare them for participation in an English as a Second Language program.

Students receive English instruction that focuses on listening, speaking, reading and writing improvement with low student-adult ratios and state-of-the-art computer systems.

Field Trips are an important part of the program. One was a trip to the Butterfly Pavilion.

The students are very excited about learning to read and write and have been making many books in class that they may take home to keep and read to their families.  They are also learning to read maps so they can successfully navigate the streets of Denver. We have completed a unit about plants, which culminated in a visit to the Botanic Gardens.

We have also been learning about colonial life in America and visited Four Mile Historic Park where we panned for gold, made corn fritters over an open fire, took a wagon ride and discussed the contents of a real covered wagon.

If anyone has any gently used picture books you would like to donate to our classroom, we would like to give them to our students who have no books at home to read.  Also, we are collecting empty Pringles cans with the lids for a future project.
