Merrill opened its doors in 1953 as a junior high school. It was designed by Temple Buell and has been officially recognized as an outstanding example of the architecture for the period. It was named in honor of Louise Merrill, a fine principal at Byers Junior High. In 1982, Merrill was converted to a middle school serving grades seven and eight. Soon afterwards 6th grade was added which represents its present configuration. The school's highest enrollment was 2,100 students as a junior high. The present enrollment rate is 605 students. |
