Students are expected to be in class on time every period. A student is tardy if not in class when the bell indicating the start of that period rings. A student is excused if he or she has a timed pass signed by a teacher or other school staff member. The excused student gives the pass to the teacher, sits down and begins class.
A student is unexcused if there is no pass. If entering class tardy and unexcused, the student will wait inside the door until the teacher is done instructing or managing opening procedures. A student’s tardy will not interrupt an entire class. When the teacher is ready, the student will fill out a lunch detention slip. The student may then join class. An unexcused tardy is entered into the student’s attendance record.
The teacher will always confer with a student about an unexcused tardy. A second unexcused tardy will earn a teacher/student conference, a lunch detention and a parent contact, usually by phone, to inform the parent of the tardy and the policy. A third unexcused tardy will earn a lunch detention, a conference with the student advisor and another parent contact. Any further unexcused tardies will earn the lunch detention and a formal referral to the student advisor; additional consequences could be either academic detention or in school suspension. If a student continues to be tardy a parent conference will be required.
