Student productivity is the expectation at Merrill Middle School. Any student exhibiting deliberate intention to be non-engaged in academics and the attainment of his/her own education may be assigned academic detention. When a student enters a room without materials, refuses to get out materials and begin academic work, and/or continues non-productive behavior in the classroom AND the teacher has assisted and redirected the student to begin working, the teacher may assign the student academic detention.
This detention takes place after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Grade level teams support and staff detentions for students. Parents will be notified prior to the detention. THIS INTERVENTION IS NOT A SUSPENSION; rather, it is to provide the nonproductive student time to exhibit productivity.
If the teacher determines that disruption, distraction of other students, low-level defiance of authority and/or disobedience was a root cause of the problem, they may enter this interaction on the conference atom and that will constitute a level one offense. It is the hope of Merrill Middle School staff that one or two visits to academic detention will redirect the student to consistently engage in the academic expectations of his or her teachers. If a student does not attend more than two academic detentions, they may receive an in school suspension. |
