Gifted and Talented

At Merrill, identified G/T students may choose to participate in the Honors program.  We aim to schedule at least one G/T elective per identified student. This class will stress creativity, problem solving, computer skills, higher order thinking skills and 21st century skills.   They will also learn from their peers as they collaborate, share, critique, and discuss ideas and solutions to problems.

Brian Weaver, G/T Coordinator, is a licensed Specialist and teacher for the Gifted and Talented program, working closely with Martha Wilcox, the district office, our team of Honors teachers and, of course, the students and families of our G/T students.

GT class at Art Museum

This year, in meeting with state and district compliance, all identified Gifted and Talented students at Merrill will receive Advanced Learning Plans ('ALPs'), which are currently in the drafting phase. These documents will serve students well both now and throughout the long-term with regard to ensuring the maximization of academic and intellectual potential, the subsequent differentiation of curriculum and instruction within the instructiona core, and also with gifted-specific affective goals and objectives for capturing more of that "whole child" perspective. These plans include enrichment and parental involvement goals.
