WHAT DOES A SCHOOL COUNSELOR DO?

My name is Dr. Sharon Hastings, and I get to be your child’s school guidance counselor this year at Merrill! Merrill has been one of 2 programs in our state nominated for the national Recognized Model Program for counseling. We’ll continue working towards completing the requirements for that award in 2009-2010!

What do school counselors do in the 21st century? Today, we help all students in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development and career development, helping students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow. Unique to our role is working with all kids through a guidance curriculum, individual and group counseling, and working with College in Colorado.
I hope to serve a vital role in maximizing student achievement by implementing a comprehensive guidance program. I will address the needs of all students through prevention and intervention programs, specifically taking Merrill Middle School kids into account. I facilitate these groups:  leadership, grief, and divorce. I also work with the students’ transitions into high school and into Merrill.
I meet with the teaching teams weekly to stay updated on the names of students who need counseling. I also help am involved in activities including professional development, consultation, collaboration, leadership in school programs, program management, and use of student data and action plans to affect systemic change within the school.
Most of my conversations with kids are confidential, meant to help kids resolve or cope with problems and developmental concerns. But, I will always ask if I can share information if it involves something that you need to know about. Call me if I can help you or facilitate communication here at Merrill!
