Student Council

The Student Council at Merrill Middle School is the student voice of the school by which the students make lasting decisions on how to deal with school and community issues. The students focus on Service Learning. Service learning challenges the students to use knowlede and skills to solve real life issues intheir school and community.

The student council is represented by four students from each grade level 6th through 8th. Anyone may choose to apply to join the council.Tthe selection process occurs each fall. The students are notified of a vacant position. They compose an essay describing the contributions they could make to the school, the qualifications they possess and have exhibited the academic record which make them eligible to be a member of the council.

The applications are then reviewed anonymously and given a score based upon a rubric. The highest schores are then selected for the available positions. In the event of a tie, the applications are further reviewed by the selection committee and they have the final decision.

Current and past student councils have run candy sales, showed movies, and organized socials. The proceeds are given to charitable organizations throughout the metro area. They have worked with the local elementary schools to help improve the literacy in the early grade levels. The memers also sponsor spirit weeks and spirit drives to help the culture of the school. The older members have acted as ambassadors to visitors of the school.

The student council is a positive influence on the school and the community. They model the behavior and ethics that each student in the community should exhibit. They gain the leadership experience that will help to prepare them for their roles as the future leaders of tomorrow.
