AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It is also a word derived from the Latin root avidus, which means „eager for knowledge.‰ AVID is an elective class in which students and their parents choose to participate. AVID focuses on the „middle‰ student, those that have a GPA of 2.0-3.0 or are Partially Proficient/ Proficient on CSAP and are the first in their family to attend college or university.
Each student will take a regular schedule of college preparatory classes and will be able to complete all requirements to be eligible for admission to a four-year college or university. AVID is NOT a study hall, however tutors are provided during the week to guide collaborative tutorial groups. In the AVID class the students become a „family‰ inside the school and learn a variety of strategies to succeed in Honors, Accelerated, and AP classes. During the middle level years, the class stresses looking ahead to high school, college and careers.
If you are interested in knowing more or your student has expressed interest in being part of the AVID class there is an application and interview process, please contact the AVID Site Coordinator, Ruth Rhodes or AVID teacher, Brigid Clark for more information at 720- 424-0600. There will also be an AVID information table set up at Registration, August 14 and 15, 2006.
