Christina Sylvester is thrilled to be joining the team at Merrill Middle School as Principal. She is new to Denver and moved here with her two dogs and amazing husband in July. Mrs. Sylvester is particularly excited to join Merrill because of the incredible growth trajectory the school has experienced in the past five years, coupled with the amazing international student population. Living and learning abroad has been a passion of hers, and she has studied abroad in Belgium, Argentina, Italy and Mexico, where she completed a Fulbright in 2010. Mrs. Sylvester went to middle and high school in Los Angeles, where her wonderful parents (married 37 years!) and brother still reside. She moved to Chicago to attend Northwestern University where she received an undergraduate degree in Spanish and k-12 teaching. After college, she taught 7th and 8th grade Spanish for five years at a beautifully diverse middle school in a northern suburb of Chicago. She assumed an assistant principal position at a very large and diverse middle school in the southern suburbs of Chicago where she served for five years. During her time teaching and leading, Mrs. Sylvester earned a Masters in Education in Instructional Leadership and English Language Acquisition at Loyola University Chicago, where she is currently pursuing her doctoral degree, with an expected conferral date of Spring 2017. She is passionate about educating the whole child, believing that adolescent learners need strategic social emotional supports along with well-rounded academic experiences in order to thrive. She is committed to serving the students and community at Merrill Middle School so that it stands out as an institution of excellence in Denver Public Schools.
