This is Dr. Hastings’ 5th year at Merrill and her 21st in education. She has also been a band director, assistant principal, principal, chaplain, and literacy coach. A Kansas native, she graduated with a BS from Kansas State University in music education, her masters’ degrees from the University of Northern Colorado/Denver Seminary in Clinical and School Counseling, and with a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from UNC.
Her calling at Merrill is to provide a safe and caring space, affirming and listening to the hearts of our students. She empowers excellence in integrity, academics, and relationships, and encourages students to be their best at whatever they choose to do. She also teaches at the university, preparing students how to be counselors and leaders, where she was teacher of the year last year! She started PREP Middle School in DPS, an alternative school for students having a tough time in their home schools. She is a lead on the district crises team, and speaks at national and state counseling conventions. She is particularly proud of Merrill Middle School, the only middle school in our state awarded the distinction of being a recognized model counseling program.
Being a mom and a grandmother of 5, her interests include cooking, traveling, skiing, camping, music, and missions work, particularly in starting schools for girls in countries where they are not allowed to attend school. Eagle Outlook retreat center.
